First you need to know that Every Student Can Succeed
Tutors aren’t just for kids who are struggling with some specific challenge or who need a particular teaching style. Some kids are on the fast track to a very competitive education and future. These kids work very hard and have good concentration but are genuinely pushing the limits. They need guidance and support. They shouldn’t have to run into barriers because they have a question without anyone to answer it at the time they’re working through an assignment. Support from a knowledgeable tutor who understands the content can make the difference between passing work and excellence.
Getting Extra Help From an In Home Tutor
How do I know my child needs a tutor?
There are times when parents need to provide extra help for their children. Specific behavior happening regularly indicates extra help is needed. Every student has those days when it is difficult to concentrate, so look for the behavior to show consistent patterns. For example: Forgetting to do or turn in homework. Doing homework and then failing tests anyway. Excellent work one week and poor work the next. Being extremely social but with little interest in school work. Getting good grades but relying heavily on friends’ homework, answers and support. Doing well in some subjects but struggling with one particular subject.
Some kids are easily distracted by other things going on around them. It is difficult for them to remain focused. Poor
memorization, reading slowly, and poor test scores are indicators that extra
help is needed. This child may be able to discuss the material and may know the topic but can't retain the information and so tests poorly and rarely finishes homework. With tutoring, these children develop the ability to retain learning, complete their assignments. Once these skills are taught by the tutor these students often excel beyond their classmates.
In some classrooms, especially large ones, teachers can’t adapt to every child’s learning style. A tutor, one on one, will tailer his or her approach the the student’s particular learning style. The tutor will also work on developing all of the students learning styles so that the student can learn from any teacher.
Visual learners learn by watching. They call up images from the past when trying to remember. They picture the way things look in their heads. Forty percent of secondary students fall into this category.
Auditory learners tend to spell phonetically. They can sometimes have trouble reading, because they don't visualize well. These
students learn by listening and remember facts when they are presented in the form of a poem, song or melody.
Kinesthetic learners learn best through movement and
manipulation. They like to find out how things work and are often successful in the practical fields, such as engineering, carpentry or design. These students make up 50 percent of secondary students and have difficulty learning in a traditional setting. However, they can be highly successful professionally.
What should I expect from private tutoring?
We will assess your child's learning style. We can then provide learning experiences in the method that is best for your child. Our tutors will scaffold the information. Scaffolding is the process of breaking down each separate thought or idea and then instructing the student by building a strong foundation for memory and understanding. Understanding is built idea by idea, step by step, like a tall building on a strong foundation.
Improvement is a process. We will develop a team attitude between your child, your tutor, and you. It doesn’t always take a long time. You would be surprised at how a few months of regular tutoring can make significant and permanent changes in a student’s grades and study skills.
A little extra care and effort with your child makes
a big difference. Employers will want employees who are willing to take on responsibility, learn new skills, and effectively communicate with their co-workers. Helping our children be successful in school today can improve their success in the world of work tomorrow.
